what can we do?
people ask me the same question over and over and i don't have an answer for them
-do you ever plan on going back?
ideally, i would love to.
technically, and with the way the shit keeps hitting the fan in lebanon, highly improbable
i've come to a point in my life where even my job does not satisfy me
it is strange that i have this urge to make a difference NOW and not 10 years ago when i used to scorn patriotism and idealism and politicism
i'm becoming idealistic as i'm growing older and i begin to realize that i want to play a part in the future of my country (or assure a future for it let's start with that)
i see a 2 caste system in lebanon right now - middle class and the elite
they differ mainly in lifestyle and social circles - BUT- what is striking is the similarity in their way of thinking: sectarianism, religiosity, corruption and 'bribability' are still hot on the market
and we still have the blind leading the blind. ruling families that continue to rule and propagate. and the public that is so easily swayed by emotion and short-term happiness but lacking in logical and wise choices.
and to think that ONLY A FEW have looked back at the war and repented. how will they repent if they do not understand that what we are still doing today and all the trash that we throw at each other because of race or religion or ignorance was the fuel behind our civil war. AND WE HAVE NOT PUNISHED OURSELVES FOR IT. NOT ONLY THAT BUT THE SAME WARLORDS YES WARLORDS NO MATTER WHAT THEY CALL THEMSELVES TODAY ARE STILL IN POWER.
Soooo, where is justice?
should justice not be in our hands rather than in some int'l court?
why not lift this carpet of a country that we have and give it a vigorous shake once and for all?
i was talking to a friend and we were trying to think of ways that WE the new (and hopefully wiser) generation can make a radical change in lebanon if we ever go back
it has to start with changing the way people think
the goal would be a secular politically stable country resilient to external poking
where civil marriage is mandatory and society is no longer patriarchal, and there is a real democracy based on political affiliations and not religious/regional ones
but how can you change the way of thinking of an entire country?
i want your input on that.
target the young
engage them in non-political non-religious community work (like the wonderful Volunteer Outreach Clinic) and inter-mix the christians with the druze with the muslims etc etc
teach kids about the civil war in schools and agree on ONE version (that alone will provoke another civil war)
but what else? AND MORE IMPORTANTLY, PRACTICALLY SPEAKING, WHAT CAN WE DO?

Sectarianism is killing us slowly. Let me rephrase that, sectarianism is killing me slowly.
It is funny, but I posted something similar yesterday night. I kind of gave up after all the shit that happened yesterday. Lust for power…
This whole socio-politico-economic situation has been stagnant for years. Maybe this everlasting consufion is part of what we like about our country, but we refuse to admit it.
Are you ready to give up all the luxury that you have here, for a useless job back home? I don't think so. And you know it very well. There are no job opportunities and I am sure that this is your priority, right?
As you said, 3 solutions:
1) GET RID OF ALL THE POLITICIANS THAT WE HAVE. THEY ARE LEADING US TO CHAOS. fcuk Aoun, geagea, berri, harriri, joumblat, nasralla... and the list goes on and on.
2) WE NEED TO ERASE CIVIL WAR FROM OUR MEMORY, SOMEHOW SOMEWAY. Theoretically we should learn from our mistakes, but apparently we keep on repeating them.
3) MOST IMPORTANTLY, as you pointed out, THE PEOPLE HAVE TO BE EDUCATED (starting with myself). You said kids. I also say parents and everyone else.
PS: I don’t think I answered your question on how to do that, but I had to get this off my chest :). Recognizing where our problem is is a good start though.

hmmm..I plan to go back. if I get a decent job there then I would give it a shot, its worth it. we owe it to this country to give it a shot. The last time I was in Beirut I tried explaining this concept to a couple of my ex-supervisors, and they really thought I was too naive and idealistic. but if we all leave then who is this country left with?
as paul mentioned, we need a complete new wardrobe "takem" of politicians.we should not let history repeat itself. so every person who was involved in any kind of war crimes should not even be considered. and here we are considering aoun as president and Gaegae as a reborn hero;and Joumblat and Franjieh and the list goes on..
I think the solution is in the new generation. our generation. slowly our role in the country will start to become significant, and slowly we might begin to abolish sectarianism and fanatism. I mean take a look at who is left in lebanon, our parents and our grandparents..i dont know..like 60% of our generation is abroad? (is that a logical estimation?)
but for that we need to go back.we need to get involved. we cant keep on lecturing from the outside. its total bullshit. someone has to sacrifice. and we need to spread the word.

ok .. i am officially addicted to your iowa/canada blogs!
it's Abbas(E) here..
i think to solve this, every person should start with his/herself... before preaching..
let go in your personal life/connections of prejudice that unconsciously seeps under ur skin (or consciously), and hopefully within a few generations, things will change...
Being active is good. but one is active on the outside, keeping the bullshit in the inside, things will only stay the same if not become worse...
so..

I am surprised by how many opinions the Lebanese have (well actually I'm not.. I know that already), one would say that we have it all figured out. long time ago.
well, Lebanon is perfect. don't change a thing. don't move a stone from its place. absolute paradise!
and the people. oh my god.. the most humble beings. friendly, welcoming, the epitome of goodness.

From my little brown chair, I can sit for hours and profess my love for the country through words and pictures, but what am I really doing? nothing.
Absolutely nothing.
But I have an excuse. I am an expatriate. I am helping through the acquisition of knowledge and a liberal, secular, mature system of thought and action.
But once I go back, will I live up to my ideals, or will I just earn my daily bread, and dissolve in the swarm of liberal, secular, idealistic youth lost between Gemayze and downtown?
What will I do. What will we all do.
The answer had better be left unsaid, Rouba.

Every single day the same idea occurs to me: "Why don't i just drop everything, pack my bags, and go straight to Leb… don’t look back, I’ve had enough of all of this career-oriented, purpose-driven life. It’s destroying me by the day". I think: "Isn't that what I really want? so why don't i just do it ?!" ...but then you think it over; is that the only problem? Am I the problem itself or is it more than that… I think of all the people who are running away from Leb, my family with no/limited income, my friends who got scattered all over the world with no one left to pick me up from the airport or to have coffee with in downtown... I think of all the chaos, corruption, lying… i put on the TV and listen to all the stupid selfish politicians that are destroying our country, it’s the same news everyday, I listen to all the people nagging about that... then again to those same people voting for the same bunch of politicians. 2al l tikrar bi 3allim l 7mar! wlak la reitna 7ameer!!!
Lebanon is amazingly ironic, 3anjad... I don’t understand how it is possible that there exists a place you cannot live in and you cannot live away from... wein l logic, w shoo 7alla hey?! Pls someone tell me.
Few months back, I took the decision of going back to leb, and accept or deal with the consequences... and for all of those who will tell you: "wait a bit, things should be clear soon"... Well things will never be clear, and it will never get better... all this chaos is part of Leb, it is Leb! Tomorrow will be worse than today, and in 5 years it will be worse than tomorrow. So, maybe its better to go back today, or maybe i’ll never get the chance...
I only need to find a decent job and I’m looking...
I’ll just grab the first opportunity… bass weina? i don’t want to wait for long? I’m afraid I’m gonna change my mind! I don’t want to!!!! Am I really asking for too much!!!
