fever

ever woken up to the blurry edges of the world? i haven't been sick in a long time. i see sick people, treat sick people, dismiss sick people, but i haven't been sick in ages.
sick when the cold wakes you up, when the shivers invade your body starting from your toes to the top of your head. you dig deep into the covers, fold the covers into your folds, stay stock-still to concentrate heat. and all the while you are burning up boiling churning especially your forehead. the fire in your head embroils your brain in a stew of stuttering dreams. you fall into a trance of dreams amidst shivers that rack your entire self. and you fall into the same miserable dream everytime you fall asleep. you wake up and forget the dream, but you are reminded of it in your next dream. you thrash about the bed wanting a cooler head and a warmer body, (and this damned dream just won't let go). you glance at the clock and it's been an hour of only two minutes. you wish for the sweat to break but you can't sweat your temperature is rising and you remember your tylenol that is expired. you cannot move anyway even if it's expired and you wanted to take it. you can feel every joint bone sinew in your body and they culminate into a crescendo of pain with every shiver. there is groggy pressure around your eyes nose maxillary sinuses that drills deep into your soul to let you know you are powerless. you have been invaded and there is nothing you can do but submit. your body your mind even your dreams have been snatched away and you are a writhing puppet of feverish misery awaiting salvation. you mutter silent prayers to an elusive god and then you feel your brain hurt. it HURTS! and just when your heart contracts into hopelessness, just when the night is at its darkest and you are on the edge of the living world, the silver streak of dawn threads through the room and you put your hand to your fuming forehead. and feel two plump beads of sweat. suddenly you're drenched, and all is right with the world.
