the good, the bad and the ugly

Spencer Platt/Getty Images

Platt, an American photographer from the press agency Getty Images, won the World Press Photo Award 2006 for a photograph taken on August 15, 2006 south of Beirut, during the first day of the cease-fire between Israel and Hezbollah, just as the first inhabitants of the town, who had been evacuated, were coming back home.

  • Honestly the picture did not strike me when I saw it.
This is not something new for a Lebanese. This mix, or blend, of destruction, war and love of life is (unfortunately) our everyday life. What is fascinating for foreigners is casual for us.

  • I wouldn't call this fascinating as much as I would call it surreal. The fascinating thing is how fresh the girls' tans look meanwhile their country is burning.
    Gotta love life though, right?
