i love socialism equilibrating liberating. i want limited resources to be allocated fairly and justly globally. i want my orange UNICEF box not to be needed anymore. i want sick poor people to be like sick rich people. i hate superficiality and materialism. people strutting around in porsches talking about the next ferrari. i hate cool affluence versus nerdy poverty. people born rich and people born poor.
i hate imperialism. i hate cultural dominance. i hate religiosity of any form. i hate the laws of the jungle. i hate that life is a bitch and so is your english teacher (to quote my 9th grade english teacher who slave-drove us). i hate snobs and snobism. i hate people who go with the flow to go with the flow. people who are cool because it's cool. i hate double standards.
but i love beautiful clothes. i love to have more beautiful clothes. i love places with beautiful people. i love beauty. i love my car (but it's no porshe). i love good expensive wine. i love a sumptious succulent meal. i love to live in moderate luxury. i love classy people. i love the rich splendour of a big city. i love to see people enjoying life (which means spending money on epicurean pleasures). I love epicurius. and did i mention that i loved beautiful clothes?
so does that mean that i'm a double-standarded hypocritical snob? probably. but i'm honest. and maybe one day i can help equality become more equal while keeping a vast wardrobe.
one thing's for sure. i want to live my life like i drink my tequila (shot) - one little sip at a time to maximize the satisfaction and minimize the damage. and yes, wzm, you should TRY IT. one little sip at a time...

I have to say the first two paragraphs you sounded like Schtroumpf Grognon... or rather Schtroumpfette 'grogneuse'? if she'd ever be created.. hehehe. are you?
but you're right and don't think it's double standard because we do have a sense of reality about life but still enjoy the finer things. and I am sure when you would have enough money in the future you wouldn't hesitate about making a difference. but for now enjoy you 'moderate luxury'.

Canada is a perfect example of socialism. Sick poor people are equal to sick rich people, they both get crappy medical care. Socialism is nice, when you're poor. When you're rich it loses its appeal and functionality. Equilibrating society should be a choice, not a requirement. Theoretically it all sounds nice, unfortunately in reality abuse exists on all levels. Wealth could be looked at in two different ways. One, it can be synonymous to greed. But that's a very small fraction. Could be inherited wealth, or hostile business practices and such. However, the bigger fraction of wealthy people are typically those who worked hard, went to school, achieved, and are now reaping the fruits of their labors. They're not typically uber rich, but they have a very comfortable lifestyle. Why should they be forced to give half their possessions on a yearly basis to the government to squander on people who are more than happy sitting at home, drinking beer and smoking pot all day, or to single mothers whose purpose is to get pregnant and then live off the government? To really understand socialism you have to live in a socialist country and see how it fails, just like any other blissful government system.
I don't think I'm materialistic, but I do strive for a comfortable lifestyle. Even in my broke ass days as a student I was still donating to Amnesty International, Unicef, and Greenpeace. I was also involved in the community. But I was doing so by choice, as any sentient human being should ever have to do anything. However, like yourself there are materialistic things that I want out of this life. I love beautiful clothes, though I can afford none at the moment. Fine wine and old single malt scotch are the bane of my pocket, and all culinary delights (though I'd rather make them myself). Unlike you though, having a Ferrari is on my list.

gus the schtroumfs! i love them! but i feel like gargamel today
LC i know there's no perfect system but many people did not choose to be poor/miserable so why not make it a duty to help them rather than a choice?
a world like an oprah show where i get my boutique signature brands, you get your ferrari (red?) and we're all being showered with (my) favourite bordeaux - equality

I feel hypocritical too about enjoying having nice ‘stuff’. I feel that we have the socialism in our hearts as good human beings but we know, like LC said, that it fails as a system because we’re after all human beings. not greed. we work hard and we want to kick back and enjoy what we made. I feel for the poor and for human suffering. I feel so low sitting on tv gobbling up on some Italian sweets and seeing a commercial for famished kids in some third world country. i sponsored a kid. very cheap though to contribute. cheaper than the cable bill. so i ended up feeling more guilty and more like a hypocrite! who am i kidding? But what can you do?
I do want the most expensive clothes. I enjoy luscious fabric and tasteful designs. I want vacations in exclusive resorts and a time share in the sun. I want the luxury too. Are we hypocrites? Better believe it, good at heart though.

Dr G,
This reminds of a famous quote (unfortunately cant remem the author)...
"If it were not for the intellectual snobs who pay, the arts would perish with their starving practitioners - let us thank heaven for hypocrisy."

I don't know why it reminded me of a quote from "Animal Farm" (by George Orwell)
"All animals are equal but some are more equal than others"
whatever...
